OC Test Dates 2026: Registration, Exam, and Results Timeline
Why Dates Matter More Than You Think
The NSW Opportunity Class placement process runs on a strict schedule. Missing a registration deadline means waiting an entire year to apply again. Planning around these dates also helps families structure preparation, book practice tests at the right time, and avoid last-minute stress.
This guide covers the typical 2026 OC test timeline so you can plan ahead with confidence.
OC Test Application Timeline 2026
The NSW Department of Education follows a consistent annual calendar for OC placement. While exact dates are confirmed each year, the pattern has been stable for several years.
1. Registration Opens — Typically March / April
The online application portal usually opens in early March to mid-April for the following year's Year 5 entry. Parents create an account on the NSW Education Application Portal and begin the registration process.
You will need:
- Your child's full name and date of birth
- Proof of Australian / New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency
- Current school details
- A valid email address for results notifications
2. Registration Closes — Typically Mid-May
The registration window is usually open for around 6 to 8 weeks. Late applications are not accepted under any circumstances except for exceptional, documented cases. Mark this date in your calendar with reminders at least two weeks out.
3. Test Authority Letter — Sent in June
A few weeks before the exam, families receive a Test Authority Letter confirming:
- The test date and time
- The testing location (usually your child's current school)
- Special provisions approved (if applied for)
- Your child's unique Test Authority Number
Keep this letter safe — it is required on test day.
4. OC Placement Test Day — Typically Early May
The test is held on one designated day across NSW, usually in May. The assessment is conducted online at the student's school, in the morning, and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours including breaks.
If your child is sick on test day, notify the Department immediately — a catch-up date may be offered only in documented illness cases.
5. Results Released — September / October
Placement results and offers are typically released in September or early October. Parents receive an email notification with the result and, for successful students, an offer letter from one of their nominated schools.
You will be informed of:
- Your child's overall placement score
- Whether a place has been offered
- Which of your 3 nominated schools has offered the place (if successful)
6. Accept or Decline — Within 2 Weeks of Offer
Families have approximately two weeks to accept or decline an offer. Declining does not automatically release the place to another student — this decision is handled by the Department.
7. Reserve List Offers — October / November
If offers are declined, places may be offered to students on the reserve list. This process continues until early the following year as places become available.
Planning Your Preparation Around These Dates
Knowing the test date helps you structure your preparation effectively:
12 Months Before (May — Year 3 / Early Year 4)
Begin gentle, foundational preparation. Build reading habits, practice mathematical reasoning casually, and expose your child to thinking skills puzzles. The goal at this stage is interest and familiarity, not intense drilling.
6 Months Before (November — Year 3)
Shift to structured preparation. A weekly schedule of 3 to 4 sessions, each 30 to 45 minutes, works well. Begin using exam-style practice tests to build familiarity with the Cambridge-style format.
3 Months Before (February)
Increase to timed practice under exam conditions. Complete full-length practice tests every 2 weeks to build endurance and time management. Review every mistake carefully.
1 Month Before (April)
Focus shifts to confidence and consistency, not cramming. Continue regular practice but avoid introducing new topics. Ensure your child is sleeping well and managing stress.
Week of the Test
Light revision only. Walk your child through what test day will look like, ensure they know where to go and what to bring, and keep the routine relaxed. A good night's sleep matters more than an extra hour of study.
Common Timing Mistakes Parents Make
- Waiting for dates to be announced before starting preparation — don't. Start based on the typical calendar
- Leaving registration to the last week — portal issues can cause delays. Register early
- Missing citizenship documentation — gather these documents weeks in advance
- Planning holidays around the test date — the date is fixed and non-negotiable
- Ignoring the reserve list process — if you miss a first-round offer, stay responsive to later emails
Where to Confirm Exact 2027 Dates
Always verify the official 2027 dates through:
- The NSW Department of Education selective and OC placement webpage
- Your child's current school — primary schools are notified of key dates
- Official email communications after registration
Third-party websites (including this article) should not be your only source for date-sensitive decisions. Always confirm with the Department directly.
