What Is the NSW Opportunity Class (OC) Program?
What Are Opportunity Classes?
Opportunity Classes (OC) are specialised classes within selected NSW government primary schools for academically gifted and talented students. Students enter OC in Year 5 and continue through Year 6, receiving an enriched curriculum designed to challenge high-potential learners.
There are approximately 75 primary schools across NSW that offer Opportunity Classes, with most located in the Sydney metropolitan area.
Who Is Eligible?
To be eligible for OC placement, a student must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or New Zealand citizen)
- Be enrolled in a NSW government school or applying to enrol in one
- Be in Year 4 at the time of the test (for Year 5 entry the following year)
Students currently attending private or independent schools can also apply, provided they intend to enrol in a NSW government school if offered a place.
How Does the OC Placement Test Work?
The OC placement test is a standardised assessment administered by the NSW Department of Education. Since 2025, the test follows a Cambridge-style format and is conducted online at the student's school.
The test assesses three areas:
- Reading — comprehension of various text types, inference, and critical analysis
- Mathematical Reasoning — problem-solving, patterns, and application of mathematical concepts
- Thinking Skills — abstract reasoning, spatial awareness, and logical deduction
Each section is timed separately. Results are combined to produce a single placement score used to rank applicants.
When Is the OC Test Held?
The OC placement test is typically held in mid-year (around May) for entry the following year. The NSW Department of Education announces exact dates and registration deadlines each year. Parents should check the official NSW Education website for current timelines.
What Do OC Classes Offer?
Students in Opportunity Classes benefit from:
- Enriched curriculum — content that goes beyond the standard syllabus, with more depth and complexity
- Peer learning — being surrounded by other high-achieving students who share a love of learning
- Specialist teaching — teachers experienced in extension and enrichment strategies
- Pathway to Selective schools — many OC students go on to apply for Selective High School entry in Year 7
How Many Places Are Available?
Each Opportunity Class has around 30 places. With approximately 75 OC schools across NSW, there are roughly 2,250 places available each year. Competition is significant — tens of thousands of students sit the test annually.
How to Apply
- Register through the NSW Department of Education's online application system during the open registration period
- List your preferred OC schools (up to 3 choices)
- Your child sits the test at their current school on the designated test day
- Results and offers are typically released later in the year
Is OC Right for Your Child?
OC is well suited for students who are academically motivated, enjoy intellectual challenges, and thrive in a faster-paced learning environment. It is not just about being "smart" — it is about having the curiosity and drive to engage with more demanding material.
If you are considering OC for your child, the best first step is to try some practice questions and see how they respond. AcePath offers a free sample quiz that gives a realistic taste of the test format.
