What Is the NSW Selective High School Test?

What Are Selective High Schools?

Selective High Schools are academically focused NSW government secondary schools that cater to gifted and talented students. Students enter in Year 7 through a competitive placement test and remain for the full six years through to the HSC.

NSW has 17 fully selective high schools and 29 partially selective high schools. Fully selective schools enrol all students through the placement test, while partially selective schools offer a mix of selective and local enrolment places.

Well-Known Selective Schools

Some of the most recognised fully selective high schools in NSW include:

  • James Ruse Agricultural High School — consistently ranked as the top-performing school in NSW
  • North Sydney Boys High School and North Sydney Girls High School
  • Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School
  • Baulkham Hills High School
  • Hornsby Girls High School
  • Fort Street High School

Who Is Eligible?

To sit the Selective High School placement test, a student must:

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen
  • Be in Year 6 at the time of the test (for Year 7 entry the following year)
  • Be applying to enrol in a NSW government school

How Does the Selective Test Work?

Like the OC test, the Selective High School placement test has moved to a Cambridge-style format from 2025. It is a computer-based assessment conducted at the student's primary school.

The test covers three areas:

  1. Reading — deeper comprehension, inference, critical analysis of diverse text types
  2. Mathematical Reasoning — multi-step problem-solving, algebraic thinking, data interpretation
  3. Thinking Skills — abstract reasoning, pattern recognition, spatial and logical reasoning

The difficulty level is higher than the OC test, reflecting the Year 6 curriculum and the competitive nature of Selective school entry.

When Is the Test Held?

The Selective High School placement test is typically held in March each year. Registration usually opens in the preceding October–November. Check the NSW Department of Education website for exact dates each year.

How Are Places Allocated?

Students receive a placement score based on their test performance. They can nominate up to 3 preferred schools on their application. Places are offered based on:

  • The student's overall placement score
  • The student's school preferences
  • Available places at each school

The highest-demand schools (like James Ruse) require significantly higher scores for entry. Students who do not receive their first preference may be offered a place at their second or third choice.

What Makes Selective Schools Different?

Selective High Schools offer:

  • Accelerated and enriched curriculum — students can progress faster and study more challenging content
  • Academic peer group — learning alongside motivated, high-achieving students
  • Strong HSC outcomes — Selective schools consistently achieve the highest HSC results in NSW
  • Specialist programs — many schools offer extension programs, competitions, and research opportunities
  • Well-resourced facilities — dedicated funding for academic programs and resources

OC vs Selective: What Is the Difference?

The main differences are:

  • Age group — OC is for Year 5–6 (primary school), Selective is for Year 7–12 (high school)
  • Duration — OC runs for 2 years, Selective runs for 6 years
  • Difficulty — the Selective test is more challenging, reflecting the older age group
  • Competition — both are highly competitive, but Selective entry attracts a larger applicant pool

How to Prepare

Preparation for the Selective test should ideally begin in Year 5, giving students a full year to build skills gradually. Focus on:

  • Regular timed practice under exam conditions
  • Strengthening weak areas identified through diagnostic tests
  • Building reading stamina with diverse, challenging texts
  • Developing problem-solving strategies for unfamiliar question types
